Passengers, lawmaker help save life on flight to Las Vegas

Assemblyman Brian Hibbetts of District 13 said he was on a Southwest flight when suddenly there were cries for help and a man lying in the isle not breathing.

Hibbets, a Republican who is a retired 27-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, said he and other passengers administered CPR, and then flight staff used an AED to revive him.

Hibbetts said policing runs in his family and that his father became a plumber after serving as a reserve deputy sheriff in San Bernardino County in California in the 1960s.

Hibbetts began volunteering with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department explorer program when he was 15 years old. He later joined the agency in 1994 and held various positions, including patrol officer, a detective for the Robbery and Homicide Bureau and police sergeant in the intelligence collection department of the Southern Nevada Counter Terrorism Center.

The bipartisan bill was sponsored by Assemblymen Brian Hibbetts (R) and Duy Nguyen (D). The bill was introduced in March, and AB 232 passed in the Nevada Assembly 35 to seven in a late May vote, then made it through the Senate a week later with a 18-3 vote.
